Think-Pair-Share
Write down the words neighbourhood and community and think about what these two words mean. In pairs, create a mind map with your ideas.
Share your mind map with the class.
Now think about where you live and draw a map of your street. Start with your home and add the places around it that are important to you. Include major landmarks, roads and local amenities, such as shops, parks or cinemas. Add recycling banks and any other things that might impact on your neighbourhood.
In pairs, compare your maps.
Discuss the following questions:
How are your neighbourhoods similar and/or different?
What do you feel are the most important parts of a neighbourhood?
What do you like about living in your neighbourhood?
